FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
hapax theatre is proud to present Beside Myself by Jennifer Wynne Webber, a deeply personal and quietly powerful play about grief, loneliness, and what it takes to keep living after profound loss. At its heart, the work explores how we carry memory, how we sit with absence, and how we slowly find a way forward when life has fundamentally changed.
The story follows Hally, a recent widow who leaves Saskatchewan for the coast of British Columbia, retreating to a sailboat in search of solitude. There, in the stillness, they find themself in conversation with memory, myth, and the lingering presence of their partner Wade. Blending poetic language with emotional honesty, Beside Myself weaves grief, humour, and imagination into a moving meditation on loss, resilience, and the fragile hope that makes moving forward possible.
Performed in the round with audience on three sides, this intimate production at the Belfry BMO Studio offers an immersive experience without audience participation. Festival seating means space is limited and available on a first come, first served basis, bringing audiences into close proximity with the performers and the emotional core of the work.
The production features Elizabeth Blanco as Hally and August Elzinga, a queer and trans non-binary actor, playwright, and poet, whose recent credits include Starwalker (Urban Ink), Hot Horse, Dirty Snake (Atomic Vaudeville), and Romeo and Juliet (GVSF). Blanco returns to hapax theatre following Hidden People and other performances with PaperStreet Theatre, bringing warmth, precision, and emotional depth to this demanding role.
A strong team of local designers brings the world of the play to life, including sound & lighting designers Emily Burke and Emma Dickerson, set designer Chad Laidlaw, props and set decor by Ricki Healey, and costumes by Hannah Mariko Bell.
Beside Myself is directed by Heather Jarvie, Artistic Director of hapax theatre, supported by Assistant Director Hannah Mariko Bell.
Beside Myself runs April 30, May 1, 2, 7, 8, and 9, with 4pm matinees added on May 2 and May 9.
All tickets are Pay What You Can. Art is for all, and price should never be a barrier. Audiences are encouraged to book early and support locally created, artist driven theatre.
